Scots-Gaelic speaker here. Pretty pointless DESU unless you plan on living in the Gaeltacht. You'll never get to use it otherwise. Even then you'll speak it badly with a dodgy accent and people are likely to reply to you in English...

Either learn it properly or don't bother learning it at all, there's no point in learning a couple of words to seem cool with the natives because it won't be percieved as special.
If you're actually interested in learning the language contact an organisation called Conradh na Gaeilge and inquire with them. Depending on where you are in the states there may be a branch near you.
