Why do Millennials prefer walking, biking, or taking an uber over owning and driving a car?
>>

It's complicated but they're very short sighted.

Give them the impression of being rich and famous but will be depressed they're shit once in their thirties

My cousin was an exchange student in Seattle and she said you guys take your car anywhere you go. Is that really so? Even if it's just within a walking distance?

Basically this I guess.

It is no longer the 60s. There's more stuff to do today, cars aren't romanticized in popular culture, and they're not easily repairable/modifiable by amateurs anymore.

Cars cost money for gas and repairs. Also insurance. Also the younger you are the higher insurance is. I'm paying like $500 in insurance because I'm 21.

My dad bought me a car (2008 jetta) when I was 15 because he was tired of driving me everyday. High school was fun, I was one of the only 10 dudes that drove to school, and all of us got along really well. We used to make pool parties and drive 50+ people in 6 cars to a town that was nearby where we lived, people invited us everywhere because they knew we would bring people with us.
It was cool and all that, but that's it, just a phase. I spend all day in campus now that I'm studying in another city, I'm more worried about my grades, my food, my apartment than all that shit I used to do. I would never drive in Mexico city, and if I do it it wouldn't see it a commodity, more like something holding me back.

They're the same thing. 16 and under are a new generation. Millenials refers to people born between 1980 and 2000, through the term itself is generally applie to people towards the middle of the spectrum.

Unless you are in walking distance, cars are essential if u actually have an actual job where being on time is a good thing. Public transport is unreliable no matter what form. Fucking povo cunts in this thread

i like cars a lot but realistically speaking a car typically sits parked and empty for like 90% of the day. what is the point of entirely owning a car when i am barely using it? i can easily walk or bike to most places i need in life. i prefer to use a carshare program if i need a car.

It's more reliable than cars. You will be in time no matter what.

Uber is not cheaper, in the long run a car will save you money in the long run Uber is just convenient, if I had to take an Uber to work every single day I would spend 1200 dollars a month on it

It's a cultural thing...independence and self-reliance is more valued in America than, like, Denmark.

Uhhhhh. There are better alternatives than Uber, or very similar companies.

Uber's success is solely due to the extremely excessive attention it has received from hipster journalists (all over the world, including here in Flanders) who seem to believe a taxi dispatching app company with a trendy website constitutes a """"tech""" company. Today they ride on the back of their popularity; eventually and inevitably they will start losing ground. They don't really possess any other 'capital' than their brand.
>>
>>55901697
Plenty of millenials own cars if necessitated by a long commute, or supported by a cheaper cost of living and less hassle in adequate parking as in the Midwest. If you work close to home or live in a city with shit parking but good public transport like NYC or pretty much anywhere in California, why bother with the hassle of owning a car?
>>
>>55907421
Independence and self-reliance are mostly "conservative" beliefs here, and rarely found outside the US at all. They're allowed for by a wealthy post-industrial economy, like the one boomers grew up in, and not really something millenials of today can afford in a modern shitconomy.
>>

>>
If you live in a pretty big city it's a very expensive luxury.
I live outside big city and need a car but if I lived inside the city I wouldn't have it because it's a lot of money every month.
>>
>>55902582
Things like that are more fun by bike, though. Here you can just take your bike on a train to get roughly where you want to go and then ride your bike through nature. I do it all the time.

Biking and walking are fun and good for your health.

ayy don't believe that shit, it's all cognitive dissonance. Millenials who say that are too dumb to save up for/own a car so they pull this bullshit to save face.

>>
It all comes down to money. At best the economy is mostly flat. most millennials don't have a car simply because they cannot afford one.

On average, anything halfway decent and reliable is going to cost you around $250 per month whether it's new or used. You may not have a payment on your used car but it is depreciating a bit every month and you will eventually run into repairs + you have your maintenance.

Gas is cheap but I can't see anyone spending less than $60 a month if they are driving regularly. Then most likely your insurance is at least $100 if you are incredibly lucky. More likely it will be closer to $200.

Between your payment/maintenance cost average per month, gas, and insurance, you're looking at around $400 absolute minimum. EVEN if you want to drive a shit box. I owned a shitbox Subaru for a couple years. I got it for $1500 and it required $2000 worth of repairs to keep it running and I actually had trouble donating it this past summer.

So why don't millennials own cars? Because a large portion of them barely make $2000 a month after taxes, seriously lol. They probably have at least a $200 a month student loan bill too with no savings. So an at least $400 month bite out of that little $2000 is a big deal.
