Firstly I don't think South Africa's military is that strong anymore. I know before the end of apartheid we had one of the strongest naval fleets and airforces in the world, but as I understand most of the gear was sold off to the below.

With SA's current shady politics and our president making friends in very shady places (Russia, for example) I wouldn't be surprised if we sold a lot of military equipment to them over the years.
