Polish looks ugly for you because you're used to the H convention (SH, CH, ZH...) due to Translit.
Also, worth mentioning that Latin is "foreign" for any non-Romance language, and Cyrillic is "foreign" for Russian since it was intended for Old Bulgarian.
[That said, I do think Latin has a small set of letters and Polish suffers with that.]

While it is true that Latin alphabet has some shortcomings for Germanic ([ʃ] and [χ] sounds have to be written with tri- and digraphs respectively), Slavic is whole different level. They have like 48 "different" (same-sounding to Western ear) phonemes that all need different, complicated transcriptions. Main culprit is Slavic languages all having that "palatal" vs "hard" bullshit going on, which leads toclusterfucks in Latin but Cyrillic solves it very easily with "ь"

While not the same difference, it's akin to the differences between SCH, ACHlaut und ICHlaut in German; subtle tongue position making a slightly different sound that, if you aren't used to, you won't get.
(Polish adds another difference to the mess - sz sounds like the SH in "she", ś sounds like the SH in "shoe", but you can't simply swap one for the other...)
