It's not just learning Mandarin, its people who waste their time learning Japanese.
The only practical reason to learn Japanese or Korean is for business purposes, but China is becoming so much more prominent that it is more worthwhile to learn Mandarin.
There's no point in learning Asian languages for business, because most Asians who do business with English speakers will know how to speak English.

Korean in my opinion is the most badass sounding language and has the best writing system. Japanese i good for muh animes and games. Chinese sounds like shit, China is a shithole, and there writing system is the most retarded in the world.
