Story I was told from a mate of mine.
backstory: he's originally from near Jamberoo, Australia. Jamberoo is a little town about 2.5 hours drive south of Sydney, about 20 kms from the coast, there's a water park near there. He tells me his uncle used to live about 50 kms west on a farm right next to Belangalo State Forest. Australia's worst serial killer, Ivan Milat, killed and buried most of his victims, (mostly backpackers) in that forest (Google it, he's a pretty nasty serial killer)
Anyway, this happened a while after Milat was captured

You can take dogs and stuff if they're registered and immunised. But Gary the goat is unregistered. The law prevents livestock, crop and animal diseases from spreading. The only experience I've had is to throw out fruit on the SA border with NSW to prevent fruit flies from getting in.

Hitchhiking was still very common in the US up into the 1990's. It was illegal but unless you were thumbing on the highway cops usually left you alone.
I used to pick up hitchhikers all the time especially if I was bored. Most people didn't realize how dangerous it could be. The world was different, we were a bit more isolated before the Internet blew up in the 90's.
I don't think I've picked one up since 1990 but up to that point helped people out whenever I could.
