You are correct. The circle is the odd one out.
The first two are incidentally my favorite Chinese characters, with 凸,meaning protruding, as it looks like something protruding and 凹, meaning concave, as it appears like a concave object. Who says Chinese is hard? Now you can impress your family and friends with your mastery of the language.

You are absolutely correct. The reason behind Mao Zedong's simplification of Chinese was just so that people would be more familiar with the characters.
One thing that is interseting about Chinese, more so in the past than now however, is that if you were to have write a letter in Chinese from lets say Beijing to Gunagzhou, both you and the recipient of the letter in Guangzhou would be able to understand the letter perfectly, however if both of you were sitting across from each other at a table, and you read the letter out, they would not understand a word you are saying. (Unless of course they both speak Mandarin and Cantonese)
