>Chinese scientists have managed to create a hydrogen gas that is three times hotter than the sun.

>The artificial solar energy could eventually be used as an inexhaustible source of power, ending reliance on fossil fuels and solving the world energy crisis.

>Chinese boffins created the gas in a huge magnetic fusion reactor at the Institute of Physical Science in Hefei.

>Researchers were able to use the reactor to produce temperatures of 50 million Kelvins (49.999 million°C) and maintain them for 102 seconds. The core of the sun is believed to around 15 million Kelvins.

THE POWER OF THE SUNNNNNNNNNN!!!

100 million degrees kelvin for 102 seconds. Not bad.

It's a Tokamak model, different from the European experimental fusion reactor Wendelstein 7-X.

The international effort to create fusion energy via different means can only be good.

>>
>>54806034
They are researching that shit for years already, so I dont think so. Close cooperation with Europe ensures that the scientific community has insights in their development status.

>>54805610
As I see it, They would need to achieve 400 seconds of 50 million kelvin, which would enable 20% of the fusion-reaction's Helium-4 atoms-cores to perpetuate the reaction, which would produce 500 MW and would totally make up thr 50 MW that has to be "injected" to keep the system running.

With 102 seconds achieved, the Chinese still have some way to go. But that's already pretty good.
>>
Is that useless cum fart of a country making shit up again?

Even I want proof. European and American scientists need to go over there and verify their accomplishment, that's all.
>>
So is fusion still 50 years away, or have we crept a little closer?
>>
>>54806060
Well, basically it is like this:

China, among other countries all participate in ITER, the international thermonuclear fusion power project. China is even one of the major financial and scientific contributors in the research, but they are pretty mad that it gets delayed all the time because le french and others cant get their heads out of their asses. Hence, the Chinese have accelerated their own, smaller-scaled, experimental reactor (Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak = EAST) and are racing ahead with that method, while everyone else somehow do little to contribute to the ITER. They hope to push the other members to do more and stop delaying ITER, but most people dont seem to give a fuck.

Germany was recently successful with the first test of the Stellarator method, which achieved 80 million K for a quarter of a second, which would validate the design principle at least. This new method isnt what ITER uses, so it seems to be another sign that the West is somehow putting that project on the backburner.
>>
>>54806707
i crept a little closer while ejaculating semen in your mum's vagina REEEEEEE
>>
>>54806786
Wont the West delaying the project only make the Chinese go at it completely alone? And its not like they will share the technology if other nations didnt help out.
>>
>>54806999
Tokamak is an old technology from the Soviet union, dated 1950s at the earliest. Research and technology is always shared, since this is an international effort. The problem is that the other western partners somehow lack the motivation to go on. China's pretty much trying to invigorate the project again by making a proof of concept by achieving a landmark.
Let's see how the other ITER partners now react, whether the test reactor will be finished or not.

Even if not, nearly all member countries have their own smaller or bigger test reactors. It is just that the Chinese have an accelerated schedule.
>>
>>54806999

What's sort of interesting is I would imagine that we (Europe, the US, Russia) have had this technology for a long time since the discovery of nuclear fission. We were just tight-lipped about it where as China gives no fucks.
>>
>>54807130
IIRC Lockheed Martin announced around 2013 that they will have a working fusion reactor by 2015. But nothing happened till now.

I am sure that all militaries have their own pet-projects that get the majority of funding. But it is just sad to see that ITER gets nothing.
>>
>>54807182

People like to make fun of the military but the reality is that they have some of the most intelligent people on the fucking planet working with them.

The Naval Academy and West Point are not only difficult to get into, but arguably have higher academic standards than places like Harvard, Oxford or Cambridge.

It has a bent and twisted doughnut compared to the Tokamak, to give a more stable environment for the plasma solenoid. Problem till now what that the materials to build a shape like that was still unavailable, and the shape also threatens to fuck up with the magnetic field's stability which ironically throws the plasma solenoid into disorder, breaking the entire fusion effect. But the Wendelstein experiment was a success, so this concept might work.

Tokamaks are concentric and do not have these weird bends and twists, and are better understood and more 'mature' of a technology.

And some timeline for the ITER:

2006-11-21 Seven participants formally agreed to fund the creation of a nuclear fusion reactor.[12]
2008 Site preparation start, ITER itinerary start.[33]
2009 Site preparation completion.[33]
2010 Tokamak complex excavation starts.[25]
2013 Tokamak complex construction starts.[33]

(we are here:)
2015 Tokamak assembly starts.[34]
2019 Predicted: Tokamak assembly completion, torus pumpdown starts.[33]

(China achieved that in September 28th, 2006, and the internationally longest version of that in Feb 2016, which is OP's article:)
2020 Predicted: Achievement of first plasma.[33]
2027 Predicted: Start of deuterium–tritium operation.[33]

>>54808706
In the realms of cutting edge research, especially fundamental research and new energy, China and the West are closely cooperating. We have quite some few exchange professors in our universities from China who are involved in Max Planck and even give lectures at time.

Another thing that the Chinese are currently very good with, is quantum research, or the applied research of it. They have achieved the longest-range quantum teleportation and communication experiement some years ago, and will send the world's first quantum research satellite to space this year, testing quantum entanglement in space, 1000km from earth surface:

What does this have to do with their scientific achievement? The Soviet Union and Nazi Germany were much more oppressive than China and also had awesome feats of scientific achievement that benefitted humanity as a whole. So much that the Americans decided to steal from us, even.

China is the same. What they do to maintain political stability has nothing to do with their scientific advancements, which are, by the way, quite good despite all attempts to stomp them down and contain them on the grounds of them being commies.

Americans are just buttblasted that their Cold War meme about oppressive societies not being able to innovate proves to be false over and over again. Nothing hurts more than cold hard facts knocking down your notions of superiority.

a finite amount of mass can create a finite amount of energy. I guess they magically cause hydrogen fusion without causing Chinkshima 2.0

It's a nice accomplishment but it isn't really a feasible solution to anything.

The beauty of renewable resources is that the resources aren't permanently removed from the environment. You have to feed the "sun" something, and once it's used, it's gone for good. Water is a finite resource that we can't permanently deplete without massive repercussions to the environment and humans, even if it's salt water. The only way this would work without ruining us is if we mined space for hydrogen-containing molecules or some shit.

We need to dispel this fiction that China doesn't know what it's doing.
It know exactly what it's doing. It's undergoing a systematic effort to catch up with the rest of the world.
