>Is it summer vacation in Australia by any chance?
Yes, it is summer vacation now. It is really too hot in Australia. I can't go outside on very hot days. 40 degrees. However, recently is it colder.

I used to often see it on Steam. The reviews are "overwhelmingly positive" too. Maybe I can enjoy it. Because I once played a tower defense game a lot.

> Yes, it is summer vacation now. It is really too hot in Australia. I can't go outside on very hot days. 40 degrees.
I miss summer. 40 degrees is too hot though. But cold drinks would be delicious in such a hot weather.

Training. So that at the time when acting on your instincts during that split second makes a difference.

You know that saying, luck comes to those most prepare?

Think it's the same way for courage. It's like, you don't want to do something stupid in the name of having courage. That's just dumb and will get you the Darwin Award for no reason. Natural selection will weed you out and evolution occurs without you. But when you know it's the right thing to do, you just gotta do it.

I think it's all about the risks associated with the situation too. Take for example:

You hear strange noises around your house at night near the door. It's bravery if you go to check out the situation and there's nothing there. It's stupidity if you go to check out the situation and there's a professional serial killer stalking you in stealth mode.

Question for all.

Why are some mainlanders so rude and annoying outside of China? I hear everyone complain about them, and here in DC, I only have met nice mainlanders.
They tend to stick together, but that makes sense because their english isn't the best.

Is their percieved rudeness a facet of mainland Chinese culture, or is it because they (Han) have been superior for as long as they can remember? And because China has developed so much and become so powerful in such a short time?

How many east asians say they act is how I think Americans (I'm from Europe) act in Europe. Superior, arrogant, and rude.
Could it just be that when you're used to being the strongest, it goes to your head?
>>
>>54412771
Nothing wrong with a little cultural appropriation ;)

>Why are some mainlanders so rude and annoying outside of China?
Dunno, though it could just be that they probably don't know about the cultural norms outside the mainland...I dunno tb-h since I'm Malaysian chinese.

I do know that diaspora chinese tend to have the sentiments you described. Since I never actually interacted with any murican tourists, I probably dunno how they act outside their cuntree.

>>
>>54412771
The perceived rudeness of Mainlanders, I believe, comes from a few things. One is that Mainlanders who do bad things while overseas are the ones who gain media attention while at the same time there's thousands of Mainland tourists who go abroad and don't do anything wrong. Second is for one of the reasons you said:

>because China has developed so much and become so powerful in such a short time?

There are large educational gaps between the old and the young generations of Mainlanders due to the fast development of China.

Perhaps the negative attitude toward China in general in Western media has something to do with it as well - maybe if a Chinese tourist does something bad the media will be more likely to report on it than if a French tourist does something bad, but I'm not completely sure about that.

Another thing is that many Mainlanders, thanks to the Opening Up of China have gotten very rich. Not just "well off" but seriously RICH. This sudden gain of money as compared to the times of hardship under the Cultural Revolution and Mao's rule means that some Mainlanders react by buying overseas houses, luxury items, etc. because some older Mainlanders still may have that "survival" mentality that they needed during Mao's rule, when they had nothing.

Just my 2 cents.
>>
>>54413162
Thank you.
Cultural appropriation in an /eastasia/ thread throws me off though. I thought you were an autistic Japanese student.

>>54413358
I don't think China wants to go through what we did. Viets are too hard to kill.

>>54413506
I agree. It is a combination of factors. There's a lot of growing anti-Chinese sentiment in the world because China has grown so fast and they are finally starting to appear on the world stage.
What better way to get elected in ASEAN that to fire up the nationalism?
Same for Xi. What better way to avoid the shame of all these newly convicted corrupt party members than to cover it with a veil of nationalism?

Chinese being an insular country with a 91% Han majority, its newfound richness, its newness to foreign cultures, and historical anti-Chinese sentiment all coincide to create today's stereotype.

As you said, a few bad apples ruin the bunch. There's more Chinese tourists than American and Indian combined nowadays, so there will be more bad apples as well.
Chinese are known for being quiet and unobtrusive while abroad, so very few notice the good people. They just don't interact much with foreigners.

The whole situation reminds me of the feeling in America of Japan in the 1980's. A quick growing economy, Japanese businesses killing our jobs, them buying up all our real estate, them forming monopolies on certain high-tech goods, and them generally acting superior and standoffish.
It led to America putting tariffs on a lot of Japanese imports, and making it more difficult for foreigners to buy property in America.

Hello, /east asia/.
I might be studying one year in Shangai.
Anything I should know? How oppressive is the government?
Should I invest in a VPN to keep fapping on sadpanda/torrent chinese cartoons?
>>
East Asia outside of Japan is fucking shit.
>>
>>54418151
>Oppressiveness
Not very oppressive at all in daily life. You'll only need to worry if you're involved in some large-scale protests or something. Criticism of the government is perfectly fine when done between friends/family.

In many ways, China is kind of like a "wild west." There's no drinking age for alcohol, in lower-tier cities at least (not sure about 1st-tier as in Shanghai I just take the subway) people don't care so much for wearing seatbelts, especially if they're sitting in the back of a car, etc.

I'd recommend watching this video on the topic for a good explanation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPr-7W5zDJ0

>VPN
Yes, definitely. you won't need a VPN for torrents because everybody in China torrents. But to access Facebook, Google, etc. you'll need one.

Be open to all types of Chinese food (chicken feet, for example).

Let me know if you have any other questions

I doubt it'll change. Nations and ethnic identity is built upon language.

If they let go of their language they might as well get cucked out of existence amirite tbqh familia?

I'm not even sure how they'd do it. The old and the young would be confused. The language is a little less efficient in writing, but thankfully the world nowadays doesn't write manually nearly as much as they used to.

>Nations and ethnic identity is built upon language.

For sure but changing the script is not quite as dramatic as changing the language. Nordic languages switched from using runes to using the Latin alphabet and I don't think that change is even close to being as culturally damaging as us having to change to a Latin language. The nordics of the time when runes were used probably felt differently, though.

With regards to the old/young thing, it would obviously take a couple generations until the transformation would be completed.

Faroese know all about having our language threatened btw because the Danish tried it for hundreds of years.

>>54424611

In case you actually meant which language we speak here, it's Faroese, but our alphabet is almost identical to the Icelandic version of the Latin alphabet.

The Falun Gong is an international media empire with its own Satellite TV, performance art troupe, parade bands, radio, newspaper, international and US lobby groups staffed by ex-CIA members, hacker groups etc. It is basically a more successful and Chinese version of the Scientology cult.

The Falun Gong practices faith healing and pressures its followers to "donate" to buy faith materials, which is how it receives a lot of funding to run the above. However, obviously just running off the salaries of its horde of stupid cultists aren't enough for everything, so the US Senate (and you, as taxpayer) pays the difference.

>Fair enough, but if there was no merit to anything these people had to say why would it be a problem for the government?

It's a fucking cult, they prey on idiots. People are generally stupid enough to fall for it. That doesn't mean the government shouldn't be involved to put a stop to it.

Actually it does. If the government found out Falun Gong was feeding money into ISIS or was funding movements to overthrow the Chinese government then they would have a case to take action, but as it is now it's nothing but a potential threat to them. Before they go to start and prosecute thought crime they should at least have proof that there is something actually going on rather than a claim that there "could be".

Many affairs in China can't be explained by some simple logic like "they fight against government so they are good", there are much more background details. One of the background information is that religion fraud prevails in East Asia and most of them are in the name of Buddhism (if you r a weeb, you might know the story of Senjougahara's mom). Another background information is that once in 1980s Qi Gong (some traditional Chinese meditation method similar to yoga)was very popular in China. Then many Qi Gong masters at that time developed their own philosophy and utilize media to spread their thoughts as religions. They commercialized, delivered speeches and wrote books. Falun Gong was one of the most famous among them. Things were not bad at beginning but later members began to rip people off and the fraud crimes soon became nationwide. Some members get arrested for their crimes while Falun Gong consider it as persecution and organized people to besiege the office of central government (imagine some religious groups surround White house, I know it can be tolerated in US but absolutely not for CPC). So the party tightened its policy on religious crime and forbade some illegal ones. Besides, the leader of Falun Gong became a political offender due to the movement of surrounding central government and flee to US to seek for help. That's why you mostly hear that Falun Gong accuse CPC of religious persecution. Many other Qi Gong religion continued in China till people no longer gave a shit about their religion. There is indeed procedural injustice in the view of westerner but it can't be naively interpreted as "government persecute good religion". Also another negative affect of these religions was that they deceived a bunch of still superstitious people into not seeing doctor and died at home because of some ridiculous treatments.
>>
>>54436703
>Actually it does. If the government found out Falun Gong was feeding money into ISIS or was funding movements to overthrow the Chinese government then they would have a case to take action

>was funding movements to overthrow the Chinese government
That's exactly what happened? The Falun Gong had government officials joining the cult, and when the central government told it to fuck off, hundreds of thousands of Falun Gong cultists swarmed the main office for a protest.

That's why the CCP cracked down. They don't take attempts at intimidation kindly, especially from a cult.
>>
>>54436000
Falun Gong is like America's fundamentalist Mormons.

It would be better if they were not around, but we put up with them because we believe in freedom of religious practice.

China is different as are many other cultures. The blight of religious fundamentalists in China is considered by many Chinese to affect not just the fundamentalists, but the society as a whole. Because the society is affected, the government should regulate or dismiss the religious fundamentalist group.

China is a much more unitary society formed around solidarity with each other.
Of course breaking apart Falun Gong helped the CCP. I dislike the CCP.

But if a government is able to break apart horrible groups that harm society via social methods, I am okay with it. China's is able to, so they should do it.

America's is not. So we do not do it.

This was a really good post and it explained a lot, thank you. However, I still cannot agree with the Communist Party's course of action as it was exactly the wrong way to handle this. By suppressing their right to free assembly they had initiated the Streisand effect. Had they have ignored them, they likely would have just fucked off in a few days and no one would have cared, but they decided to force them out or straight up impression them.

>Also another negative affect of these religions was that they deceived a bunch of still superstitious people into not seeing doctor and died at home because of some ridiculous treatments.
Fuck Christian Science

>>54437905
>The Falun Gong had government officials joining the cult
That's not funding a movement to overthrow the government, that just people converting to a different religion. It is in no way comparable to Falun Gong creating a weapon caches and raising an army with the intent to storm the Chinese parliament (or whatever the system is) in a coup.
>>
>>54436703
But that's what they did.... Fund extremists and illicit activities.
>>
>>54438540
>if they had ignored them they would have fucked off

Naive. As he explained Falun Gong was around for a number of years before it radicalized. They weren't going anywhere.

Falun Gong were a blight on Chinese society. The dismissal of the group was a good thing. Of course it helped the CCP, but that doesn't mean the CCP didn't do something good.

Scientology hurts more than just the people who practice it. This is even more true for Falun Gong in a third world society like China.

It's like tolerating a pro-Sharia law party.
The French and Swiss banned the fuck out of those parties by the way. I'm not so sure about in America, but our official party registration standards are extremely strict.

Arab Spring happened because the government ignored them, to their detriment. You don't "ignore" threats to your power, especially when they try to obviously subvert it as the Falun Gong did.

>That's not funding a movement to overthrow the government
They are converting GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS of an officially atheist state.

And then they surrounded government HQ with a horde of cultists when the government told them to fuck off.

It varies how people react from cultural to culture. Considering the Syrian civil war is under way because they tried to suppress Arab Spring in their country, it was a lose lose situation all around.

>an officially atheist state.
The whole prospect of this is ridiculous. You should not have state religions because all it does is fuck up your country in a multitude of ways, for example the entirety of the Middle East. not to mention that it is an infringement of human rights.

>>54438843
Your whole argument relies on the idea that the people of China are stupid as a whole which is entirely not true. I don't care that Falun Gong did more harm than good to the state and the people, but it is the people's right to be wrong. It is in no way the state's decision to dictate what you can and cannot believe. And again, if an idea had to merit to it, it would not get anywhere. I mean just look at all these failed parties in the US, currently my favourite being the Communist Party (pic). They get nowhere because the majority of people know they are full of shit.

Sorry if my latter post is of poor quality, it was basically a streamline of thought

"Resorting to the extremes is the argument of the idiot"
Winston Churchill

Just because the government shut down Sunni extremists and Syrian democrats and led to a civil war doesn't mean they shouldn't have tried.
Look at Egypt. They took down dictator, elected a literal Islamist, then supported another dictator who they later elected unopposed with 97% of the vote.

Shutting Falun Gong down was the right thing to do and Chinese agree.

This happened in 1996-1998. China was an order of magnitude poorer and less developed in those days.
You also forget that China has 1.4 billion people. In 1996 nearly one billion were uneducated and poor and superstitious.

A hundred million religious idiots trying to overthrow the state is a BAD thing. If they were liberal democracy lovers I'd support them. BUT THEY WERE NOT.

They were bad by any measure. And they were harming others.

>>A hundred million religious idiots trying to overthrow the state is a BAD thing.
But this wasn't happening. The only thing that is absolute about anything I've been reading is that they had converted a few government officials. So far no proof has been given for them funding terrorist groups, building weapon caches, etc. I cannot simply come to the conclusion that Falun Gong was out to overthrow the government by only the word of the Communist Party.

>You have the naivete of an 18 year old who just learned about the Libertarian party.
I'd prefer not to resort to ad hominems since it is in no way a good way to make an argument or convince your opposition to side with you. And as it is, I've tried to keep an open mind to why they deserve to be prosecuted but been given insufficient evidence as to why they should be.

>>54441551
Google is blocked on the mainland so they need a 4chan pass to post because Google supplies the 4chan captchas.
>>
>>54441567
Hopefully this stops, they should come to 4chan and chat to other people to be honest.

>동아
I can read the sounds of korean but I don't know any words, what do these syllables represent? Asia?
>>
>>54441767
동 is syllable 'dong' in Hangul. In this case it stands for Hanja 東 which means east
아 is vowel 'a' in Hangul. In this case it is the initial of 아시아 which is the transliteration of Asia

>it stands for Hanja 東 which means east
It is the pronunciation of 東 more precisely

Thank you again for the pictures. I have never seen many pictures of 19th century China. They really just concentrate on the civil war and WWII in Chinese History.

By the way I was really surprised that /east asia/ survived the night. Usually it dies when we go to sleep. Thank you Americans.

can you include "East Asian QT female feet enthusiasts" in the OP

But it says everyone else already. That's a bit specific.

Yes I will go to sleep soon too. By the way what is もう used for? I still have a lot to learn before I am fluent.
>>
>>54454230
もう in this sentence is like "already". This もう has a nuance like "It became this late while I didn't notice".

もう is pretty often used in sentences about time.
