How about GDP, trade relevance, military strength. UK is head of the commonwealth, largest soft power, prestigious unis, NATO member, financial capital of the world, booming import and export trade. We are obligated to have a large military and trident subs, if we allow ourselves to be weak, it also weakens Europe, NATO, even the USA and irrelevant ex colonies like Australia.

In the military sphere the improvements are more obvious. There are two developments in particular:
