There's basically two main weather patterns in our winters
1) West wind (70% of the time), meaning warm temps (5-10°C) and overcast, often drizzle, sometimes heavy rains
2) East wind (pretty much rest of the time), cold temps (0 to -5°C in the day, down to -15 at night) but dry and sunny (because there's huge landmasses to our East)
Snow pretty much only occurs during transitions of the two

You're on the East Coast though? That makes things a lot different, our climate is much more comparable to that of coastal Washington state. Prevailing winds on non-tropical latitudes are from the West, which makes West coast climates much more moderate than East coast ones in general (so New York etc is much more similar to some Chinese coastal cities)

It depends on location too. Where I live we are surrounded by mid-elevation mountaing ranges which "catch" most of the rain, especially in winter, so we only get about 500mm of rain per year (they even irrigate the wheat/rye/maize... fields here when it hasn't rained a lot, at fucking 50°N).
More exposed flatlands in the north or some wind-facing mountain sides in the Alps can get well above 1000mm though
