Cathedral is quite old.
Slow shift tonight. Guess I'll dump old Norwegian churches. Here's one from 1100AD.
What do you think about tall buildings standing by themselves like this? This is something they're planning in Stockholm, the first concept was taller but the new plan has two slightly shorter towers. It kinda stands out compared to the surrounding houses
>>53987685
Another one, but in Oslo, with earliest datings going to 1080, but most likely being from the 12th century. Interesting thing about this one is that there's literal fossils engraved in the exterior walls.
>>53987873
Stavanger Cathedral from the early 1100's. Originally built as a Romanesque church, but later extended to a Gothic one. One of the best preserved churches in Norway, with very few alterations after the 13th century.
>>53987863
Skyscrapers should be built with friends. If not, they just look too out of place.

>>53988039
St. Mary's Church in Bergen, completed in the late 12th century. A mix between Gothic and Romanesque style. It burned a few times early on after its construction, but it didn't see any significant damage after that until the 19th century, when the left tower collapsed. Otherwise, it's a very much intact medieval church, especially in appearance. It's closely related to the original Lund Cathedral in Sweden.
>>53987873
>Interesting thing about this one is that there's literal fossils engraved in the exterior walls.
It would be if this wasn't super common in churches though

>>53988254
I'm not convinced about the design. This is the newest render, they look cheaper with every iteration. I'm just afraid they will look really dated in a couple decades like Merihaka. I think they'll start building the first buildings this year, will have to wait and see
>>53987863
>>53988168
Stockholm and Göteborg competed against each oher here. Both wanted to build the highest building in Northern Europe. In the end, Stockholm got cuck'd
>>53988421
T-Thanks
>>53988376
Here's the concept for the whole area. Don't really know what to say about the taller buildings since they don't have any official design yet, they just started a competition for it. But as a concept it's pretty alright, they're not too tall and there's a decent amount of them so it looks pretty proportionate. The street level between the towers could be better though, since there aren't really any proper city blocks
>>53988513
First tower should be up by 2018
>>53988832
Pasila looks so depresing
>>53988832
Here's a larger picture of the south part. It's pretty wide open with some kind of meme walls to give it at least some structure. So I don't see that part having a lot of street life, but at least they'll look nice from afar. Not that Pasila has a lot of street life anyway

Forgot the most important one. Nidaros Cathedral, built from the mid 1140 to 1300 on top of the great St Olaf's burial ground, and one of Europe's most famous pilgrim destinations during the middle ages. It partially burned down only 30 years after initial construction, and then got further fucked up throughout history by more fires and even some lightning. Since the plague happened, and poverty followed, it wasn't rebuilt until the 1800's again. The majestic and ornate front wall was the most badly damaged, as in, completely gone for the most part, except for the lowest row of statues and entrance, so the present day one is a lose reconstruction, as little sources from the middle ages exist as far as its appearance was concerned. All that was known is that the wall had a large golden rosette and many statues all over. Inspiration for the reconstruction was mainly sought from English and French Gothic cathedrals, as Norway had deep ties to those countries back then and the cathedral was most likely based on those. But for all we know, the cathedral could historically have been prettier than it is now. It took between 1869 and 1968 to rebuild, with finishing touches going all the way to 2004.

nope
only large metropolies can actually build skylines, and only the very few of them can afford to build the actual ones, with decent planning (like NYC, Chicago)
>>53990889
>>53991314
They're kinda out of ideas huh, can't think of a way to reinvent a modernist box so they just start throwing random colors everywhere. Or maybe it's because there are more female architects now
>>53987863
Skylines only look "good" when you have at least 10 or so buildings.
Unlike traditional architecture where if the skyline is dominated only by a single church spire and a few smaller chimneys, it still looks nice. And of course you also have more developed ones like pic related.

>>53991861
Heh.
May the random colour cladding phase come to a swift end.
I think even Modernists, with their ultra-low standard for aesthetics, started getting bored of the same old shit buildings being built everywhere, and so their big innovation was: we'll make the buildings with random colouring.

>>53992554
I personally think it's pretty bad, not because of height, but because of its unimaginative design. I know the architects actually set out to make the plainest tower they could, but I'm not sure if that's good for a landmark tower of those proportions.

>>53994204
The skyline has been fucked since the 60s with the corporate shitboxes just now instead of offices its empty foreign investment pencil towers
>>53995216
Yeah. Partially so that the streets would get sunlight, but I guess also because there wasn't a good way to light up the interiors of the houses so they couldn't be super wide. Then when that was technically convenient, they could just build boxes with a lot of floorspace

>>implying everyone must build only traditional buildings and never invent anything new
You can invent new things without completely ignoring history and location.
>>53995992

I don't even know how building something different is ignoring history and location lol you are just mad something doesn't fits in your narrow-minded vision of the world
if people thought like this we would never invent a fucking wheel
>>53996201
>people just want to make something NEW
Why are they still making modernist boxes that could have been made any time over the past 100 years then? And you've completely misinterpreted my post regardless. I wasn't talking about destroying cities when I talked about ignoring history and location, I was talking about purposefully ignoring lessons learnt over thousands of years of architecture and building glassy boxes in locations that aren't suited to them. Being called narrow-minded by a modernist is pretty hilarious though so thanks for that.

>>53998311
Interesting design, but as you say, odd placement. At least for an underdeveloped area.
most skyscrapers in a city are lame, but then i think how cities without any skyscraper are boring unless they ahve historical buildings
cities with skyscrapers feel like every corner is its own world, theres always something to discover somewhere
Time for some Norwegian skyscraper proposals. This one is the current tallest at 140 metres, and part of a new area planned outside of Oslo, around where the Statoil Headquarters are.
>>53999151
Another one, but across the whole country, in Stavanger. It'll be 118 metres, just 1 metre taller than our current tallest.

Sarona. First a German colony, then an army camp and as of last year an open-air mall with shops and restaurants, after years of construction that included moving entire buildings. The latest in a series of old compounds around the country turned into shopping districts.
Honestly, I'm disappointed. It's not worse than the soulless mall they would have put in if they had permission to tear the old houses down, but everything outside the houses is underwhelming. The streetlights, the footpaths, the gardening, it all looks like the default stuff you'd see in a recently renovated municipal park.

Manchester wants to be our second city. But who will it attract when it looks like this?
I remember hearing a news story about some Mediterranean footballer moving to Manchestter to play for Manunited, and his girlfriend, and him, were saying how miserable it is and how offputting the miserableness of it is with regards to moving there.
But then, as I have said before, modernist architecture is about making things which looks like prisons or warehouses, so what do you expect.
>>54022104
Looks like outskirt housing, so not too bad. I visited Manchester, and it certainly felt like a proper second city. Everything was very large-scale, and things were constantly under construction.
Posting city i live close to:
”Örlogsstaden” Karlskrona, The city was founded in 1680 when the Royal Swedish Navy was relocated from the Stockholm area to the Trossö island (picture). The city name means Karl's Crown in honour of King Karl XI of Sweden.
The city has kept its street structure since its foundation. Since the streets all follow a grid pattern the winds can blow freely from the sea right into the heart of the city. Parts of the city (mainly the Naval Port) have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In October 1981 the Whiskey-class Soviet submarine S-363 (called "U137" by the Swedes) ran aground in the archipelago near Sturkö just outside Karlskrona.
The city is positioned at the south east corner of Sweden with excellent connections to the other side of the Baltic Sea. There is a ferry line to Gdynia in Poland (cheap as fug) transporting both goods and passengers.
