Our country was first colonized in the north east by portuguese and blacks (slaves). The south was basically forest until some what recently when european immigrants came to farm the land. So the south is whiter, but there's been a lot of migration from poor/black people (from the north east) in the last ~50 years

mostly, yes. They only existed as small rural communities, and a lot of people left for better opportunities. Mom's family left when she was 5yo because grampa wanted the kids to get a good education.
