Quieter and more orderly than major US metro areas, cold weather keeps most bums away, economy is good, lots of good natural landscapes (especially in the northern part), people are easy to get along with.

The US industrial core (pic related) has most of its cities as very dilapidated shitholes due to most of them utterly failing to transition to a non-industrial orientated economy. Detroit (Eastern Michigan) is simply the worst case, Pittsburgh (Southwestern Pennsylvania) is the best case, and Chicago (Illinois Coast) is an exception because its focus was finance, and it is a massive (Top 3 in US) city.

nature is western south dakota hands down
largest city is eastern south dakota with sioux falls. it's not the best city but it's not yet as bad as places like minneapolis. note it's only ~170k. don't come here for large cities

It has leftover cultural relics from when it was more important. 3 major sports teams, a symphonic orchestra, an excellent art museum, a great zoo, a big theatre district.
The only problem is that the inner neighborhoods all became black and ghetto so white people all live in suburbs and not the city itself. There's like one dense neighborhood the gays gentrified but other than that you cannot have an urban lifestyle without being surrounded by hood trash. It's very car-oriented because of this.
As a living-in-the-suburbs city I'd rate it 7/10 and as a living-in-the-city city I'd rate it 3/10
As a young adult I much prefer nearby Columbus because you can actually live in the city there
