Well no m8, Catalan has never been a dialect of Spanish and even if Catalan wasn't standarized until 1891 by Pompeu Fabra, it has always been its own distinct language. Literature from the 14th-15th century in Catalan is fairly understandable and the language hasn't changed that much.
