I fully understand the major loss of life that comes with the legal purchase of firearms, but I literally have no way to defend myself if I get assaulted, and I live in a pretty shitty area. My neighbour got stabbed just last month. Since I work a night shift at a nearby area, I have to walk to the building - and I'm extremely paranoid about it.
I bought a 3'' knife once (which is technically legal) and got it confiscated by police as I was walking around town, they claimed that carrying it showed pre-emptive motive. I'm now looking into buying a fucking torch to blind would-be assailants
Seriously, it seems like the attitude in Europe is 'run and hope for the best'. How the fuck can I live comfortably without any way to protect myself, when I know for a fact that I would lose in a fight to anyone who came looking for one prepared?

You do not have to be a citizen. I recommend taking some sort of safety course first, since I'm guessing you've not had much experience with guns. Most ranges will give you a rundown before using one of their guns anyways.
