I really don't see the point in living past 65 desu.

I feel the same way but then I think about my mother who's approaching 70 ;_;

70 is not that old yet; some people actually say that middle age extends into your early 70s and old age starts at 75. It's debatable although after 75 is when most people start to become physically limited enough that they cannot care for themselves.

I found that in general, when you're old, no matter how fit and active you manage to still be, you'll still have to suffer with the negative stereotypes. If you heard about the 2011 Reno Air Show crash which involved a 74 year old pilot, there was no evidence that his age caused that disaster (although what was left of him didn't provide much conclusive autopsy answers) and it was probably mechanical failure, yet people automatically jumped on him for it.

I'd argue it wasn't. If you know anything about air shows, the FAA makes you do a _strict_ physical exam before you can be licensed for those. Stress tests on treadmills, EKGs, the whole nine yards. Believe me, there's very little chance of a frail elderly person getting in one of those things. Bob Hoover was still doing them until 77 when he had to stop for insurance reasons, but he said it had nothing to do with his health and he passed the FAA tests with flying colors. Even just a regular private pilot's license they still make you get eyesight/hearing/cardiovascular tests every two years after 40.

After 80 judging by my grandparents, though I would say most'll make it to 85 before needing to be interned in the old folks' home.

In the US, the average age at which people enter old age care is 81 however it's pretty demographically imbalanced; any assisted living/nursing facility will have a rather overwhelming amount of white females.

It's very funny how old people have to take these tough tests to keep a pilot's license yet absolutely no requirement exists for driving a car. The FAA reports that there are about 2000 licensed private pilots aged 80 and up with 106 of them over 90 and that this is actually double the figure of 25 years ago.

True although flying a Cessna is probably easier than driving a car since you're traveling in essentially open space with no obstacles to navigate around and little chance of colliding with another aircraft.

Judging by personal knowledge of elderly neighbors, they usually stopped highway/nighttime driving after 75 and relied on their kids for longer distance traveling.

>read an old newspaper clipping from WWII about the world's oldest pilot being a 65 year old guy who'd first flown in 1916 when he was in his 40s and quit in 1941 at the age of 60

Aviation was still wearing training pull-ups in those days.

Usually people who have a shitty old age are those who act miserable about it. If you believe you're gonna end up in adult diapers, you probably will. Never underestimate the power of suggestion.

Why I don't look forward to it. I tend to have a very dark view of life.
