Nah, most Germans aren't usually confident enough in their English abilities. I can speak German better than most of them can English, so they typically feel comfortable speaking German with me. If your German is really shit then I imagine the Germans will get impatient and start bridging the gap with English.

Just some crap I made up in my head. I ranked the languages according to one's that force a higher pitch/or how the speakers sound personally pitch-wise, to very low ones. Based on seeing internet videos.
High pitch: chinese
Middle-high: japanese
Middle: French, english, scandinavian, korean, hindi
Low-middle: German, spanish, italian, hungarian, polish, persian, turkish, portuguese
Low:semitic languages (hebrew, arabic), russian

Definitely not Italian unless you have some literature in it that you're itching to read. Do something like French or Russian. Or Mandarin if you don't mind it taking years before you can read a newspaper.
