You have to force yourself to use the language outside of class, otherwise you won't really make much progress. People who learn the fastest are the ones who immerse themselves in it the most. Some people choose to change all their computer settings and stuff to a foreign language and start reading news articles once they're familiar with the basics.
Once you hit an intermediate stage and are comfortable with how to construct sentences, how to conjugate, etc., all you're really doing after that point is just picking up vocabulary.

You know I've come to realize after studying so many countries that, aside from having fundamental differences in the way we think and approach situations, we're all really the same. Japanese people and their family dynamic isn't really that much different. I think both Japanese and Americans believe too much that anime and sitcoms are an accurate representation of American/Japanese culture.
I think we would get along if Japanese and Americans realized that we do and think very similarly, most countries do despite what people think.
On a national level, we don't. But on a human level, we worry about the same things.
