"Meme tower" doesn't tell me anything. What does "meme" mean in this context? Things you dislike? It was built as a much needed telecommunications tower, considering Tokyo Tower started losing effectiveness because of the increasing number of skyscrapers around it. If you're gonna build a huge-ass telecom tower, why not make it spectacular? Would a single thick concrete pillar standing 600+ metres into the air in the middle of a city be more preferable? The Space Needle is also not the same, as it was built as a monument, not a much needed telecom tower.

I used to live in Detroit when I went to college there. There's still a lot of beautiful architecture around, or at least it all was beautiful back in their prime. Shame about what's happened, but that's the Rust Belt for you.

As Detroit's population continues to shrink (it's now just about one third of its 1950 peak population of 1.8 million), more and more buildings are abandoned. Used to be that those things were just left rotting where they stood, but over the years the city's gotten more aggressive about demolishing empty houses and other buildings, as a means of getting rid of potential crackhouses, drug dens, places for bums to squat in, etc.
The city can feel very, very empty in some areas.

A lot of bridges open and fold to let large ships pass through, but I suppose they didn't want to deal with such bullshit here and just made it really fucking tall because why not. It's very imposing and brutalist in style, which isn't to everyone's liking. Still can't deny that it leaves an impact, though.

I wonder how the current slowdown of Chinese economy and now this panic on Chinese markets will affect skyscraper building there. Some of the projects already got suspended/delayed, some heights were decreased(like Ping An in Shenzhen which originally was to be a 600+ megatall) I guess some could be cancelled too. I hope it won't kill all this highrise/skyscraper boom in China, it was really fun to watch how Chinese cities developed over time.
