I am from the cologne region and the people who are/were "pro-refugee" are starting to doubt all of this now. I have talked to a couple of female friends and they all are furious about the mayor's statement.
We will have our local carnival here along the rhine-area in a couple of weeks and most of the people are thinking that this incident will happen again, since during the carnival season, public places are much more crowded and more chaotic than on new year's eve. The police will never be able to control this. It's going to get real bad...
There will definitely be a huge political shift in the upcoming months. Most of the people are realizing now (even the pro-refugee ones), how our government and the german media is/was trying to hide all the negative aspects of the refugee influx of the last couple of months. While the local newspapers reported about this incident on the next day, all of the bigger ones waited until the pressure from social media started to get too high.
My home town (with roughly 5000 inhabitants) will receive approximately 800 refugees over the next 4 months. 2bh, I'm a little bit afraid and scared that this will get even more out of control then.

I of course am no expert, but my guess is that they will try to get citizenship here and use it for family unification.
