Britain wasn't paying their World War I denbts in a timely manner, and were trying to stunt the size of our navy relative to theirs at disarmament conferences. This moved the idea of the US fighting all of the British empire from "impossible" to "theoretically possible," which is what started the war planning.
Britain's plan was to just let Canada die, with only nominal support from the rest of the empire. The US plan in that case, then, would be to invade Canada completely and then stick the nation on the fast track towards annexation. It was the only way to be absolutely sure that you fuckers wouldn't give British empire forces a safe haven for staging a land invasion of us.
Between the Mexican-American War's pussy for a peace negotiator denying us pic related, War Plan Red never taking place, and Denmark refusing on two different occasions to sell Greenland to us even though the place is nothing but a resource drain on them, the US by right should have been a gargantuan northern North American fortress by the time World War II rolled around.
