It's hard to believe that there's over a billion people there when all I know about them is that they make cheap shit for Westerners and that their government is some kind of a commie capitalist bastardisation. What's it actually like?
I've read some expat opinions but they really seem pissed off for some reason. Have we got any actual chinks in here?

In all seriousness, it is fascinating. With over a billion people, it's hard not to believe that there are some interesting things in China that aren't getting out due to either distance or government interference.

I have a buddy who lives in Shanghai and he's pretty much illustrated to me that they have done an absolutely stupendous job at mimicing social media and other web resources but also do a great job at finding those who can even get past the great firewall of China.
He knows what happens when he accesses Facebook through proxies and they have a very sophisticated system in regards to stifling detractors and incarcerating critics. They have both an internal and external form of the CIA so to speak.
He only tells me this when he's in town because he doesn't want to talk about it in email. He's a naturalized citizen as he was married there in 2013.

Haha no he's my oldest friend I have and he's living a good life there. He just has to stay in his bubble. And considering he saved over 80k before he left he can live like a proverbial king there as luxury in the thickets of a Chinese city can be bought for $10 a day. He's good.
