I found it too hard. The pronunciation and the fact all the words are about 20 letters long made it difficult to remember words. Which made learning very frustrating.

These are just the words beginning with п in the first 100 words on a memrise course.

I just got back from Russia, and being able to speak and understand Russian was basically mandatory outside of the touristy areas in St. Petersburg and Moscow. My gf is Russian and I would've been fucked without her. If you stay in those cities you'll be fine though.
