But their economy is much smaller, and weak because it relies on volatile resource prices. Their cultural influence and soft power is very weak compared to Britain. They can't project power globally like Britain can, very few overseas bases.

The USSR joined the allies in 1941. When Germany was focusing on Britain, the USSR had a pact with Germany.
The only help Britain got at that time was from its Empire and Dominions.

OP here. Missed this.
I would say France or Germany is the strongest in Europe alone. Currently it is probs Germany. However I'm confident that the UK is the strongest European country relative to the world.
For the UK to be the strongest in Europe, I think we would have to join the Eurozone in order to get that extra European influence. However I don't think joining the Eurozone is in our best interests, we are better off keeping our own currency.
