not OP but, correct me if my train of thought is wrong, your patriotism is similar to the kind of loyalty sports fans have, your country is far from perfect and anyone with a brain can see that, but just like any country, there are good things about it that you enjoy, and these good things stand out more which makes you feel better, after all, as shitty as it is its still home, people from your own country are always bitching about how to fix it, which is fine, but if someone else from the outside tries to fuck with your land you all get together to kick his ass because this isn't his territory, and during those times of conflict, people put their differences aside to defend something they all have in common, which is the love for their home country

Some people are ostentatiously patriotic because of their genuine beliefs.
Most people are just exaggerating their patriotism because they think it is fun or funny. They and being ironically "over-patriotic." They don't really hate America or anything, but if they are literally waving a flag, it's probably tongue-in-cheek.
Deep down, I think the latter category of people is genuinely patriotic though. It reminds me of girls, who will dress slutty on halloween (or some other occasion or party) all the while talking about how they would never normally dress this way. This is just their "slut outfit" just a caricature of a slut, making fun of sluts, but "i'm not really like that". They only have the bravery to do it, if a group of their girlfriends also does so. Deep down, they are envious of genuine sluts, and want to dress provocatively, but need to justify it to themselves and others, so they claim that they are doing it "ironically".
