Before WWI we actually had a socialist movement that, while not dominant, actually had won seats at the state level and exerted some political influence.
Then the Bolsheviks won the Russian Civil War and a large chunk of American socialists went full retard and figured they should look to Moscow for guidance in all matters. That helped them none, and the problem was compounded by the Red Scares in the late 1910s and then again in the 1950s, which did a marvelous job of breaking up Socialist influences in the places where Socialists hadn't already blown it themselves.
But before all that, there was a time where we had our own Socialist movement, and it wasn't crazy about Bolsheviks, because Bolsheviks didn't exist then.

Socialism is a group of political philosophies, not one philosophy. It attempts to ban all private ownership of the means of production (i.e. businesses) and institute some system where all production is controlled in some communal manner.
Some socialists believe we can do this through government seizure of all businesses, and some believe we have to create little communes on a local level and just give everyone what they need for free.
The Nordic system and the system advocated by Bernie Sanders is referred to as "social democracy". Not "socialIST democracy", remember that.
As a socialist though, I'm confused as to why my fellow socialists continue refer to modern Western countries as capitalist though.
They'll call the Soviet Union socialist, and the socialists will say that's not true socialism, and the socialists will be right. Because the SU still had too many elements of the market.
But then those same socialists will hold to a double standard. They'll continue to call the US capitalist even though it has some elements of a command economy.
It's the libertarians that want true capitalism, an unfettered market. Now, you may believe that's impossible, but that's what they say about any form of socialism.
Why doesn't everyone just refer to both the United States and the Soviet Union as mixed economies, and only reserve the terms capitalism and socialism for when actual, true, capitalist and socialist countries arise in the future?

That stage of society is called communism.

Because the dominant form of property on the means of production is private and the main kind of the labor compulsion is economic.

Which ones? It had no private property on the means of production and the social politics were more developed than in any other modern country.
Adopting elements of socialism doesn't make system socialist and so is backwards. Socialism is the intermediate stage between capitalist and communist society.

Also, I think that it's unfair to say that America crippled socialism in Russia. Lenin crippled socialism in Russia, then Americans propped up his shitty government with food-aid in the name of the greater good and then Lenin took that food and sold it to wage war on other Russians who were solely united by how much they fucking hated him. And since Russia was first I think it could be fair to say that socialism was straight up gimped on a base level. Maybe if somewhere that wasn't a backwards shithole had tried it it could have worked but I think Lenin did more harm to humanity than Hitler and Stalin put together.
