My mother's side is Lithuanian driven to Cuba to escape the USSR (one of the only countries they could have a peaceful immigration)
My father's side were dutch pirates, even up into the 20th century my grandfather was payed to spot German subs in WW2 and fought in the revolution for Batista (losing side)
being pirates my family created a siege on Santa Clara charging inland and taking wealth which we still have hidden in cuba b/c after castro we couldnt smuggle it. (back in the 1800s, piracy runs in the family)

America preserves cultures, because when people come to america, they adopt american culture for their 'actual' culture, and keep their traditional culture in a sort of stasis. The natural cultural evolution and change only happens to american culture, not the muh heratige cultures

The diaries were published and maybe they're available online somewhere, but someone in my family has the copy I originally saw in Italian. I've never been to Verona though. I guess there's a lot of records that could really shed a light on my family there - maybe you have the same curiosity because we're both new worlders with this separation but fascination regarding the "old country".

Yeah, I think New Worlders are so interested in muh heritage and muh ancestry because most New World countries don't really have much culture and tradition where people can plant their roots. Plus they're so ethnically and culturally diverse that there isn't really a cohesive cultural identity. My ancestors have been in America since the 1600's, though, so my roots are firmly planted here. I'm pretty much as American as it gets. Well, aside being Native of course.
