Tarkovsky is and always will be one of the greatest film directors of all time

Your typical New Year line up. Basically everything Gaidai.
Plenty of actually good stuff in 60s-70s

His movies are boring

stalker is a masterpiece, but most of his other films are a bit clumsy from a director's point of view.
It really feels like a culmination of a great cooperation with his cinematographer.
If you see most of his other films they tend to dwell on the existential a bit too much, especially when he tries to cram in his poetry.
>>53003039
Funny you should say that, because it was the culmination of uncooperation with his cinematographer :D
The negatives were developed improperly and almost everything had to be reshot
He quarreled all the time with the cameraman Georgy Rerberg until finally Tarkovsky fired him and shot the interior footage with a new cameraman
Also, it isn't his poetry, but his father Arseny's. I don't mind it, I think it worked great in Stalker and Mirror.

there's a documentary about this relationship with his cinematographer:

Error and failure are trully our greatest tutors. It is so sad to see them demonised so much nowadays.
:)

But Stalker is bad film. Book is better, Tarkovskii lost all plot meaning.
>>53003918
the book was pure pulp, it was enjoyable but none of the characters had any development. All it had was a great setting and its surprising how much more Tarkovsky developed it (i think the book's authors helped him tho)
>>53003918
Text is great for stories and ideas
Film is great for atmosphere and images
>>53004030
Yes, the Strugatsky brothers wrote the script with Tarkovsky
