What we consider "Spanish" is actually Castillan. There are a lot of Spanish dialects/languages spoken in Iberian peninsula. Portugal was never conquered by the Castillans and brought into the Kingdom of Spain, so they kept their own language/dialect

Spanish is a second language to me and it's not spoken in my home or anything, but to me when I hear Portuguese it just sounds like I forgot how to speak Spanish.
From what I understand, it's similar to German and Dutch, i.e. Dutch can understand German fairly easily but Germans have more trouble with Dutch. I've only heard this before I have no idea if it's true.

If I hear spoken Afrikaans I usually can only understand a single word here and there, but whenever I see a South African post something in Afrikaans here on 4chan I can almost always understand it. As far as I'm aware, it's similar in the /nordic/ threads where people can read each others languages but have trouble making sense of the spoken version (maybe with the exception of Danish which nobody can understand, including the Danes).

In portuguese "e" is prounounced kinf of as "ee" (leech), while é as in chess.
In italian they're more similar, but one is pronounced closed while the other open ( if you don't know what it means, just understand that the pronounciation is different).
