For some reason urban areas in Spain are super dense, even small towns in the middle of fucking nowhere like Valladolid, Ponferrada, etc. have apartment buildings everywhere instead of separate houses. I've wondered why for a long time but can't come up with an explanation, other than tradition from desarrollismo or because everyone wants to live in the inner parts of cities...

It depends, for example I live in a very touristic city and the historic area has mostly old buildings which are usually cheaper than a modern home in the outskirts. But it's different in other places, especially in the bigger cities I suppose.
