The war started at the end of March, he volunteered in his city's special police and officially enrolled in the army in mid April, 1991. The reason he waited for so long was he had Hodgkins and no one wanted to give him clearance to join. In his psych eval, there is a quote "I don't want a shit disease to kill me, I'll die on the frontline from a bullet". He rose to the rank of captain, served in every action except Vukovar, got shot twice and survived the cancer by 1993. My mother worked on sewing and providing clothes for refugees from other parts of the region

It's okay for the most part, as I said Makos are pretty welcoming people.
However it's clearly a ton more balkan than Croatia, hell, as soon as you cross the Serbian-Croatian border you can feel the difference, don't even mean it as an insult to Serbs, it's just how it is.
It has a big problem with unemployment and corruption, the current government here seems to just sit on their thumbs all day. Albos in western Macedonia are a problem as well. It's also really poor compared to home, so I can live pretty well for less money.
All in all I honestly miss my country a fair bit, it's a much better place to live than here.
