Both in terms of architecture and in terms of culture, Communism simply worked as a time capsule, meaning all of Eastern Europe is about half a century behind in everything. We have freedom of movement to the rest of the EU. The difference is that the Schengen Zone scraps passport controls. Other EU citizens are free to come here, but we retain the right to check their passports as they cross into our country. This is important for obvious security reasons - you need to know who's coming into your country.

Because the EU is MUCH MORE than the Euro and Schengen. If you want access to the European free trade area, you must follow EU rules and make various payments into the EU budget. That being the case, it's much smarter to be inside the EU where you can influence the rule-making process, as the UK has done to great effect in the crafting of the single market. Being outside the EU and following those rules anyway, literally paying others to tell you what to do, like Norway does, is REALLY stupid.
