A lot of places in the west still had loads of pollution in any town with manufacturing.
Also my grandfather noted and I've read from research that while upper-class whites behaved, lower-class whites were far worse. Greaser gangs were not a myth, he said that there legitimately were gangs of alcoholic high-school dropouts in leather jackets with knives and guns lurking around who would stalk kids and mug them.
It wasn't until the 1980's really that gang violence became basically just a minority thing

A lot of 50's culture was actually pretty oppressive, insofar that you couldn't really talk about anything bad that happened, and bad things did happen. There was a shitload of PTSD from WWII, which resulted in a lot of spousal/child abuse, for example. This resulted in kids doing some really fucked up stuff to each other, which you couldn't talk about, and rampant alcoholism among housewives. Ever notice how a lot of 50's ads feature women drinking cocktails, even if there's no connection to alcohol in the ad? There's a good reason for that.
Of course, I should point out that things were mostly good, but the oppressive atmosphere eventually caused people to explode in the 60's, once the kids that grew up with it got old enough to speak out. This started off well enough, but pretty quickly got corrupted by a haze of drugs and sex, which carried into the 70's. Culturally, we couldn't go back after that.
Even then, the economy didn't really falter until the 70's actually hit, and the double punch of stagflation and the oil embargo basically fucked everything over for us even to this day.
It's an interesting era to think about, and a lot of the prosperity was very, very real, but it wasn't 100% perfect like we like to think of it.
