icelandic is the closest to old norse for that matter, if you're into the Sagas...
>>
>90% of the population of any given nordic country and fluently speak english
>wanting to learn their language

Literally why? The first fucking words out of your mouth and they'll realise you're a foreigner and start talking english
>>
Faroese
>>
>>52885704
If you're going to move to a country you should adopt their culture regardless if people speak English there or not.

Or else you're a fucking parasite.
>>
Arabic
>>
>>52885476
The easiest would probably be Swedish or Norwegian.
Danish is a little harder, and Icelandic/Faroese are the hardest. Faroese even more, thanks to it's etymological orthography.
>>
>>52885476
Are you planning to stay in a Nordic for a prolonged period of time?

Otherwise this >>52885704 Australian is right.
>>
>>52885476
The language of the country you want to move to. Otherwise I'd say you shouldn't bother and learn a useful language like Russian or Mandarin instead.
>>
>>52885704
Simply ask them to not speak english because you are trying to learn the language.
>>
Norwegian lets you understand both Danish and Swedish easily

>>52885669
Wrong. Faroese is closest to old Norse, but maybe he does like neither folk/black metal nor mythology. Even if I love both, it would be a waste of time to learn a language spoken by 50.000 people.

>>52885476
Besides Finnish, which sounds like Hungarian (and that means bad), all these languages sound cold, and that's on my liking. But Icelandic and Faroese are the best. Old English was a nice language too, a blend of Gaelic and Germanic, now it's French mostly...

Finnish doesn't sound like Hungarian. It sounds more like Icelandic but with less consonants.

it depends, are you black?
>>
>>52885756
this
>>
You should learn swedish.
>>
>>52887899
It sounds nowhere near iclandic.
>>
>>52888509
This, unless you plan on living in some particular country.

Swedish will get you communicating with 10 million people in their native tongue and you can also talk well to Norwegians and the Finns who paid attention in school.

Norwegian makes it somewhat easier to communicate with the 5 million Danes, but only 5 million people speak Norwegian.

The Celtic-mixed island monkeys are irrelevant.
>>
>>52885756
This
>>
>>52888705

Because of the consonant centric nature of Icelandic. However, when an Icelander speaks English it's easier to notice the similarity.

Hungarians are Slavic to a massive degree and when they speak English you might think they escaped from a gulag.

Learn Norwegian, because apparently Norwegian speakers can sort-of understand Swedish and Danish speakers the best, compared to the others understanding eachothers' language.

Also, for any Norwegians or Danes reading this:

The only correct answer is whichever country you plan to reside in for an extended period of time. Otherwise, just use English when speaking with Nordic people; they almost all good enough at it (old people may be an exception)
>>
>>52885476
Norwegian and Danish for their usefulness, Icelandic for its beauty.

>>
>>52893821
what is useful about either of those languages? if you don't live there they have no use to you.
>>
learn finnish . why??? you ask. it is very simple.
because the others are GAY!!! lmao!!!!!
>>
>>52894045
They're more useful than other nordic languages, for sure.
You can find a job as a translator, even here in Poland. I know a couple of people who learn Norwegian.
They're not so common as English or German, so you can earn more. And yet they're popular enough for you to have a chance of getting job. I doubt there's such thing as Faroese translator. That'd be the ultimate meme job, considering it only has 66k speakers.
Also, Norway and Denmark have good life standards. If you're gonna move there, knowing their language is useful. Again, who wants to move to Iceland?

I'm not even mentioning Somalian and Finnish in my posts. We're talking about Nordic languages.

Yep that's right, Indo-European steppe folk never managed to conquer more than a quarter of Finland and later on Finnic people with advanced bronze technology settled it and absorbed the aboriginals and Indo-Europeans.

Ð is silent in most cases, but pronounced like a "v" in maður, "g" in veðrur, etc.
Æ is pronounced ae in most cases, but a in certain words. Suðuroy dialects always pronounces it as "e".
It's true that "ki" and "gi" make a "ch" sound. I don't think Icelandic does this.
>>
>>52885476
Estonian
>>
>i only need to speak english xD
>t. never been outside his own country
>>
>>52897138
Ð isn't exactly "silent", just servs to change the consonants or vowels around it. There's a difference between "eða" and "ea", very slight but it's there. Also in words like "kvæði", isn't the ð pronounced like a j? Sorta like "kvaji"?

Which dialect do you speak in?
>>
>>52897408
>in words like "kvæði", isn't the ð pronounced like a j? Sorta like "kvaji"?
true.
I'm from Tórshavn, so my -ur sounds like -ir, but that's probably the most noticeably thing.
>>
>>52897597
>torshavn
>being relevant
Let's all not forget about the city who has 'fug' in its name
Fuglafjorður, way more beautiful and scenic than torshavn
>>
>>52897597
My grandad was from Öravík in Suðuroy, so his Faroese was probably quite different from yours. A lot of what I know of the language's pronunciation comes from him so that may explain the discrepencies.

>>52898035
>Fuglafjorður
Not bad, very nice town and apparently great fishing spot.

>>
>>52899318

Not at all. Estonian sounds very "singsongy". There is no obvious similarity except to the Turku dialect which was influenced by medieval Estonian immigrants.

The literally only thing Icelanders shitpost about (which is something they always do) is about how Icelandic is the most like Old Norse, otherwise they have nothing to bring to the conversation. The mainland Scandinavian languages is how West/East Old Norse would sound if they evolved naturally (if you ignore the outright loanwords). Fucking shit I hate Icelanders more than Danes.
>>
>>52885476
Swedish is the only relevant one.
>>
>>52899189
>>52898035
>Let me tell you about your language

>>52898035
Fuglafjorður is full of baptists btw
>>52899189
Old Suðuroyingar always speak with a heavy accent, whereas the youth speak with a slight accent may use different words. I'm afraid dialects and accents across the nation are beginning to disappear.
>>
>>52900326
where can i learn faroese? i don't need immersion right?
>>
>>52900855
You probably do
>>
>>52899743
Not quite true. Old Norwegian was systematically erradicated when Norway was under Denmark, it only survived with the dialects, although very diluted.
>>
>>52899743
>dirty Swede monarchist shitting on the free, beautiful, uncorrupted Icelandic language
Danes aren't that bad though
>>
>>52885476

>>
>>52885476
You should learn Norwegian and I'm not just saying that because I am Norwegian.
I'm saying you should because we have a lot of Danish and Swedish words in our language.
So, basically you'll be able to speak all three languages.
Danish and Swedish also have a lot harder pronunciations. (Especially Danish)
