NI is economically a drain on the UK, a post-industrial province that is slow to modernize because the world avoided it during the Troubles. It does have a lot going for it though. Its about as homogenous as you're going to get. It's very traditional. It's cheap to buy property and there's still a lot of open land. Street level crime is relatively low. There is virtually no "modern" politics because of their obsession with the past.
The main problem with a united Ireland is that the Republic doesn't have the ability to put down civil war. The Irish parliament realised this in the 70s. The concept of a united Ireland is something most Irish people would go for, but they're more than aware its unworkable.
