Can anyone explain to me how the USA came to lose a war against the northern half of a shit-poor third world country?
They had every military advantage it's possible to imagine and still lost to a peasant army and insurgent force of pyjama-clad farmers with rusty WWII rifles, a third of whom were women.
And lost TEN THOUSAND aircraft in the process.
What exactly happened? It's worse than the Emu War.

That would basically be our only choice.
The Vietcong were the Vietnamese people. It was a popular anti-colonial movement.
Our goal should've been turning Vietnam into an Asian version of Yugoslavia.
Vietnam had a vote whether it would be communist or not. Majority voted communist but south refused. The country got divided in two just like Korea.
Then became the puppet states. North was funded by Soviet and China and the other communist states. While south was funded and supported by the west.
TLDR: West wanted to stop spread of communism and east wanted to spread it more. It was basically a chess game between USA and Soviet Union.
Politically wise it became too much for the U.S and they pulled out.
That is the simple explanation.
