I speak Luxembourgish (like half a million speakers) and I learned Walloon for a year, although I forgot most of the latter one. The language is pretty memey though

a category between rare and scarce would be good, given the amount of languages that have between 1000 and a million speakers diving it into two would be good.

>Sardinian (sardu, limba sarda, lingua sarda) is a Romance language primarily spoken on three-quarters of the island of Sardinia (Italy). A number of scholars consider it the most conservative Romance language,[3] and its substratum (Paleo-Sardinian or Nuragic) has also been researched. A 1949 study by Italian-American linguist Mario Pei, analyzing the degree of difference from a language's parent (Latin, in the case of Romance languages) by comparing phonology, inflection, syntax, vocabulary, and intonation, indicated the following percentages (the higher the percentage, the greater the distance from Latin):[4] Sardinian 8%, Italian 12%, Spanish 20%, Romanian 23.5%, Occitan 25%, Portuguese 31%, and French 44%.

Can anyone help me decide what language to pick for new years.

Italian because it's my grandmother's native language. Also have some family in Italy that I see every 10 years. Don't really like the language though. Have about150 to 200 hours in it. (Can read child stuff and have tourist level conversations)

French. I think is a beautiful language and I can see myself spending a few years living in France.

Russian. An ugly language but the country fascinates me, as do the current events and history. I also like that it is a bit didactic compared to the usual languages learned in the UK.

French Tbh, you should just pick whatever language you find the most interesting/beautiful
And you could also improve your Italian while you learn French, learning two languages at the same time isn't that hard

Slovio is cool, but I don't think that it holds the key to Esperanto's success, although I find it interesting that the author of the video paints a picture where Slovio and Esperanto don't compete, but rather help each other.

The video emphasizes that Esperanto has failed. I don't really think this is true, because ~130 years is not long for a language to exist at all. In that short time, Esperanto has grown rapidly and is used seriously by many people. If it is already most popular in the Slavic-speaking world, then what use is there to advocate Slovio in the same region? If I'm not mistaken, more people know Esperanto today than ever before in Esperanto's history, so it's clear that Esperanto has not even peeked yet and that it's not in decline.

I think if anything, Slovio is a failed project where Esperanto succeeded. Even if we don't count how many people know Slovio, but just go by intrinsic merit, I would say Esperanto is a better language. Esperanto's roots aren't accidental. Zamenhof was a speak of Slavic languages (Polish and Russian), so he could have made his "international" language Slavic-oriented. The rationale for Esperanto's Latin and Germanic roots is that the most widely taught languages in the world use the same roots. Regardless of whether someone is from China or Africa, odds are that if they had ever received instruction in a foreign language, it was probably French, or English, or Spanish, or German, etc. (Nowadays English more than any, but the premise still holds; English itself borrows heavily from French and Latin.)

Esperanto is still the most easily comprehensible languages for the largest segment of the Earth's population due to its schematic nature and recognizable word roots.
>>
>>52881208
The video says that China won't accept Esperanto. We already know that's false because China is the one place where Esperanto grew the most in the latter period, and it received support from the Chinese government. The PRC has a state-run news site in Esperanto, and I also I wouldn't be surprised if El Popola Ĉinio has state backing, although I'm not really sure who creates it.

China is poised to become the dominant power in the world pretty soon. I think the Chinese have no particular loyalty to English, which is why Esperanto is looked upon favorably (as a way of undermining US influence, for example). Given English's difficulty, Chinese students are aware that they can learn Esperanto faster and with less difficulty. The Chinese will never think that their own language is appropriate for the entire world. One reason is a kind of superiority complex, where they think that only they're smart enough to master it.

Also in a more balanced world, where a non-English-speaking majority of countries were to choose a standard international working language, it's hard to see why they wouldn't choose Esperanto if they knew about it.

Finally, promoting an interslavic language (like Slovio or Interslavic) is more or less a kind of pan-slavicism, which is not viable. Pan-Slavic movements get dominated by Russia and then everyone gets forced to learn Russian. That's basically what the USSR was.
>>
>>52881208
>>52881236

I am sorry, but I don't understand what you mean by this.

Do you mean that I am wrong because Esperanto or Slovio have no dialects or something ?, I really not getting the point.

I've considered moving to Iceland as well, just because I like remote, isolated places. But that is just a general "might do someday" at this stage.
