True but the French military has it worse. You don't notice it because the French maintained more frontline military units and their logistics + future development suffered. We lost more obvious things like carriers, the Harrier fleet early, etc. But many of our losses will be replaced in the next decade by things that are big improvements on what we lost or indeed what the French have.

It's a meme that we're more dependent on the Americans just because we have closer ties with them. The fact is it's the British military that can act more independently due to us spending money on logistical enablers that don't attract much attention but do important jobs.

It's true that the UK's policy on the EU has been short-termist less exploitative than it could have been.
However you're missing something big. For the UK to take a real leadership role in the EU, we would need to be properly integrated which means joining the Eurozone and much else besides. This would cede more sovereignty than most people are comfortable with and almost certainly be detrimental to the UK economy. It is too great a price for what we would get in return (more influence in Europe).
British influence will grow anyway due to us having the superior economic and population growth of the Big Three. We will most probably remain less influential than our size would suggest due to keeping "one foot out the door". On the other hand, we retain a flexibility and independence that among other things, will allow us to have a more effective foreign policy outside of Europe. Our leaders are once again casting their gaze to the East, to the Asia-Pacific and Indian Ocean, places that the British Establishment have never stopped being fascinated by.
Your own opinion will be shaped by whether you view the UK as a small island off the coast of Europe or a global power with global ambitions
