My grandparents bought a house for about 400k in Spain like 5 times larger than your pic. Spain has beautiful plains with plenty countryside villa's that are really affordable since 2008.

Allot of people do. My grandparents first lived in an area next to a small town in that was purely elders (mainly British) buying a retirement home there. The entire Costa Brava/Costa Blanca is covered with these appartment regions. Now they live like gods near Zaragoza, despite being slightly above average wealthy.
