火・水・木・金・土, these character originally came from 五行 treated as theory for grasping the truth of physical phenomenon in the world ,
and five main planets used for calculation of date.

In Russia the week starts on Monday, don't delude gaijins.
From a layman's point of view:
Monday - пoнeдeльник - ponedel'nik - somehow related to the word нeдeля (nedelya) meaning "week" but the relation is unclear from the point of view of modern language. Maybe it means that the week starts with it.
Tuesday - втopник - vtornik - the meaning is quite clear, it means "the second one", from втopoй (vtoroy).
Wednesday - cpeдa - sreda - something clearly related to the word stem meaning "middle". As a regular word, cpeдa (sreda) has the meaning of "environment".
Thusday - чeтвepг - chetverg - quite clearly related to the word meaning "four" (чeтыpe - chetyre; as a cardinal number чeтвepтый - chetverty - "the fourth"), although no one can explain why it ends in "g".
Friday - пятницa - pyatnitsa - the fifth one, formed identically to втopник (vtornik - Tuesday), though with a different grammatical gender. No one really knows why.
Saturday - cyббoтa - subbota - from the word meaning Sabbath, although Sabbath itself is only ever called шaббaт (shabbat) in Russian. Not everyone realises that subbota (Saturday) is related to shabbat (Sabbath) since they sound different.
Sunday - вocкpeceньe - voskresen'ye - meaning Resurrection, but this form is only ever used for the day of the week. The word used to mean "resurrection" is вocкpeшeниe (voskreshenie). These forms are never confused. Obviously Christian in origin.
