Tasavvuf is a method of reaching God, and all mutasavvıfs (sufi for you) have their own way of it, so deeming tasavvuf a sect is like deeming making money a sect.
This way of religion never was, and never will be popular among public, because tasavvuf requires complete devotion. It is a sort of permanent meditation.
Bonus: Tasavvuf is unislamic. The first rule of Islam is not to commit shirk and the main idea of tasavvuf is pantheism (vahded-i vücud). This goes against tevhid.
