Actually a high dollar isn't that great. Good for Americans going abroad but it makes America a less desirable place to import from, it's the reason why China purposely keeping their currency so low was a big political issue here.

Dollar strength? More like everyone else is weak as fuck.

Everyone else is undercutting the US on purpose by devaluing, leading to their economies growing faster. Dollar strength is a side effect of us being the reserve currency, but it historically led to us being incapable of adjusting policies for slowdowns and accelerations.

The Yuan/Dollar is at a May 2011 level of 6.48. This is far stronger than the May 1998 level of 14.6.
Whatever the anon I responded to said about it was wrong.

The Chinese only started allowing the Yuan to be traded offshore in 2010. They've slowly been increasing links with more and more countries (UK, France, and Germany last year).

Also, the Yuan is heavily controlled by the Chinese Central Bank and they have the power ($3.5 trillion) to control it. This means (meant) the currency is less freely traded than many others.

This benefits China's domestic export/import economy, but it strangles their financial and high tech industries. Since they want to strengthen domestic Consumption, they have slowly internationalized the Yuan.

Today it is about 8% of the world traded total. A massive increase from .01% in 2005.

>>
>>52797470
I understand, and to address your second point while it is true that there are a lot of problems I believe that most of that feeling is caused by a certain opacity and misunderstanding from the europeans about how their institution works.

Medias only ever cover events, not the work being done to address those issues. More often than not, no mentions are ever made of the responses made to european problems.

Europe is filled with smart, willing and decent politicians to be honest. Reforms are needed, and work is beind done. It is always too slow for the people, but as long as it does not come too late... we will be fine.

While I wish that was true, it is unfortunately not.
They are corrupt bureaucrats who are making really big money doing literally nothing. They are government^2, cause they are bigger, have more power and debate useless issues like 'what's the right height of a flame in a lighter'
I like shengen, I like being able to meet people from other countries, hell even make some money abroad without big fuss. But with all those advantages, comes great deal of disadvantages, which are starting to appear right now. I just hope that we, as europeans, will sort something out, that will satisfy the citizens, as well the countries.

No, I disagree with you from personal experience. I have spent quite a bit of time doing citizen-lobbying at the European parliament for a non-org that defended citizens interests in telecommunication laws (net neutrality among other things).

And believe it or not, I actually had many pleasant interactions with people from both the Parliament and the Commission.

They always listened and tried to understand the issues at hand and while we (often) had disagreements there was never a moment were I felt they weren't concerned about making the smartest decision possible and that was a surprise.

I mean, we - a bunch of students that got a lot of signatures - were treated the same as industry lobbyists and tycoons, all of that very transparently.

I am sure you can find crooks and people who will abuse the system but I really don't think it is the norm, and I believe that most try to do good and believe in Europe.

Our gas would be cheaper if the biggest national oil company wasn't in the brink of collapse. Also the marginal cost of production would be lower if there weren't legislations compelling national oil companies to use nationally produced equipment instead of importing them.

Basically the final agreement was signed by a bunch of countries but it has no legal binding, it just says that all the participants agree with the final draft.

Then the Commission (EU government) propose to the Parliament (Represents the Europeans) and the Council (Represents the states) to make it EU law.

The Parliament rejected it so it could not become EU law.

>about all the other alphabet treaties about 'trade'?

That's the thing. Big corporations have a lot of money and political will, and in a context of economic crisis... politicians are pretty sensible to arguments like "we will move our HQ/factory/research center to country X or outside of Europe" so they compromise... others are just sell out etc...

That's why it is so important to have citizens getting to understand the EU better, so we can fight corporate attempts at making our lives shittier desu
