Because, you fucking dipshit, it is easier to defend the Koren Peninsula than have to defend the entire Japanese coast in the event of an attack. Having a presence on the mainland Asian continent that acts as a target for Chinese military helps keep flak off of your fucking islands. It's also a great buffer from that fucking gout-ridden hamster in Pyongyang from fucking up an entire peninsula that's a literal ferry ride away from your homes.
It's about balancing the pants-on-head-insane PRC sphere of influence and allowing you and any other Asian countries to do your thing in that region. You want China to have more sway in the region?
