despite how much you want cute tf2 heavy Russian friends, a lot aren't that at all. I've visited Russia twice, once Moscow, and once rural south near Ukraine. The question "what are they like" is fucking stupid because most people are fairly normal, but in general they're a bit more gruff and while not aggressive, more abrasive than a normal westerner. Compared to people in the UK at least, they seamed a lot less friendly. The Russians I made friends with however were very nice, although they all were very fixated on certain things, none seemed especially laid back about anything.
Just my two pence, but you should go visit Russia and Russians yourself friend, travel opens the mind.

I sorta feel bad about saying this regarding an entire nation, but the responses seem to agree with me.
What I'd like to add is that there are a few Russians that I've met who aren't like this. They have this sort of nobility about them and are remarkably aware of themselves, which is rare for any particular nationality.
Not sure what I'm trying to say here, but I would like to make others aware of what Russians and their ilk have said ITT, that the fall of communism was a massive shaping force in their national character...for good or ill.

In response to your query, I'm tempted to refer to my own upbringing as a child of that era. I was born in'76 (yeah) and have distinct memories of how our media/government portrayed the "russkies" as we called them.
