Turbofolk/chalga/popfolk is all the same shit, it's basically dance modified folk music singing about money and bitches. It's the balkan's equivalent of gangster culture.
Pic related, it's music about this type of gangster, called the "mutra", which means pighead. In the post-soviet anarchism, many gangster groups rose, and their godfathers and soldiers looked like this guy, usually ex-wrestlers/athletes and socialist high-ranking armymen, they looked like gorillas, wearing black suits, black glasses and breaking bones. Those people loved to throw money in the balkan type pub - kruchma/mehana etc. And they loved singers to praise their lifestyle and that's why this type of music became popular, because of those "mutras". It's nothing even resembling turkey. This of course happened the same way all across Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia and Romania, but it didn't happen in Greece, greeks probably just evolved their music into something resembling chalga and everything in the balkans mixed from there on. Since 1995 all Balkan music sounds very similar. The other thing is gypsy music, which is influenced by Indian music and balkan folk music, had turkish influence as well and it mixed alongside the turbofolk.
