From my own experience, this seems to be a relatively new phenomenon. I remember several decades ago when I was just a kid, people identified as Polish, italian, German, Irish, Slavic, etc. Now, that whole group of people just calls themselves white. I'm guessing that the fact that there are so few pure-bred European Americans anymore has a lot to do with this.

I've seen people with German and Scandinavian relations laughed out of a lot of places, particularly on the coasts, even if they were white. For the most part, anyone not from a British Isles bloodline is treated more alien than most.
