>not learning vulgar latin which is what the romans actually spoke
>>52748516
Arabic, because there are Sumerian loanwords (via Akkadian), so it is the closest thing you can speak to the oldest attested language.

Gotta get all that compelling content, like Bath with Rufus ASMR and Secrets of the Imperial Cult: a murder mystery series. All and so much more readily available for consumption.

Chinese for a couple of reasons
-Helps you later learn Kanji
-Being able to speak it impresses the fuck out of people
-The characters look really cool
-For no reason, people will assume you know more about business than you do
-Gives you instant cache with Chinese people you meet in America, and there's more and more of those folks living here every day.

If you already speak English, there's no practical reason to learn another language other than just for laughs.
>>52749904
Learn klingon or make your own language
learning spanish at the moment, since i figure it's good to start with an easy one, but have it be useful too.
planning on learning chinese when i'm done, which should be quite a while from now.

Learn Finnish and Esperanto
ESPERANTO IS AN AUTISTIC LANGUAGE
>>52750902
Autism is good for the body and soul
I've been learning Arabic for the past 2,5 years, and I can only say DO NOT FUCKING DO IT unless you are a masochist.
>>52748874
All memes aside though, it's proved that learning Esperanto as your first foreign language will drastically help you if you learn more languages later on. Not because it's such a useful language, but because you learn a whole lot about how languages work.
>>52750942
>Arabic
What's the hardest part? I'd expect it's the three-consonant roots?
>>52750983
I'd say that's one of the easier aspects actually. The two hardest things with Arabic by far, if you ask me, are the alphabet and the difference between written and oral form. Normal written Arabic don't write vowels, so if you have never seen a word before, you don't know how to pronounce it. You can make an educated guess, but you can never know for sure. And the difference between modern standard Arabic (MSA) and the numerous dialects are so big that you basically have to learn two languages at the same time, because THE FUCKING PLEBS DON'T SPEAK MSA. And of course you have differences between dialects. I'll use my Lebanese teacher as an example: A native, fluent in Lebanese dialect and MSA, yet completely unable to speak with people west of fucking Libya.
IT IS HELL.

Why are you learning Arabic? Do you live in Oslo?
>>52751319
>Why are you learning Arabic?
I like languages, and I've always been fascinated by the Middle East (I'm not muslim). I figured it was a good place to start.
>Do you live in Oslo?
Normally yes, though at the moment I live in Beirut as part of a last-ditch effort to immerse myself and become fluent. I'm just home right now for christmas.
>>52751422
>I've always been fascinated by the Middle East
I learnt Farsi for a while, and it's bloody easy. Easier than maybe Spanish.
Only challenge is the alphabet. You should try it tbqh
>>52751469
It's high on my list, I figure if I ever get fluent in Arabic, I'll give Farsi and/or Hebrew a shot, just because of the similarities.
>>52751530
Farsi's not really similar save for vocab and the script.
Farsi plurals and conjugation are some of the easiest around (suffixes), and there's no genders in the language, etc.
Chinese, couz they will win in nuclear war
>>52751583
>vocab and the script.
That's what I have in mind. Reading Farsi will be a breeze if I already know the Arabic alphabet, I think there's only a few letters that are written differently, with 4 or something added. And 50% loanwords, yes please.
>>52751530
Modern Hebrew is not very similar to other MErn languages senpai
It was literally made up less than a century ago
>>52751800
A lot of similar words, and similar grammar, only easier. Or so I've heard from people who speak both languages.
>>52748516
Try ENGLISH.
German because I like how it sounds and is written. Also, because I fucking hate french.
After that, probably, japanese or chinese.
