whats the difference tho?
>>
>>52745741
"Ser" = permanent characteristics that describe something (personality, height, name, color, etc.)
"Estar" = conditional characteristics that describe something (emotions, location, etc.)
"To be" expresses both ideas

>>52745241
You know, be

I be, you be, they be. He, she, it, we be. I've been, they've been, we will be, kings and shieet.

This this is basic 5th grade grammer, anon

All languages have a form of the verb "to be".

It's rarely used in Tagalog, but it exists.

Here's a fun fact: in Mandarin Chinese, pronouns have no gender when spoken, but they do when written. The rest of the language lacks gender of any kind.
他 means he, 她 means she, and both are pronounced tā.

Some sentences will never be translated to english perfectly because of the ser/estar split.

One time I accidentally said "I am bad" when I wanted to say "I'm feeling bad" because in english apparently the opposite of "I'm good" is "I'm feeling bad"

English doesn't have standalone verbs in the infinitive tense. In Spanish, for example, the phrase "to be" is expressed in one word "ser" or "estar" for conditions subject to change. Conjugations of "to be" in English include: am, is, was, were, be, being, been.

>>52745687
I once gave German a shake. Your language is fucking crazy. Just how many genders do you need for those nouns? Not to mention going into the neutral gender when talking about multiple objects. Fuck. Do you really need to capitalize every Noun in the Sentence too?
>>
>>52745998

Hi, I use sign language

There is no to-be verb.

SORRY
>>
>>52746859

I'm bad is fine, depends on context. Don't have to add "am feeling".
>>
>>52748165
Capitalising the nouns are what every high class Americans used to do to be quite honest with you senpai
>>
>>52748367
Never heard of such a thing. America (including Canada) has never been about kissing the ass of the upper class anyway, hence our accents.

American Sign Language is basically Japanese for your hands.
>>
>>52745207
My native language has the verb "to be". It just standardly is not used in the present tense (although the present tense form does exist, and there are situations that occasionally demand its use)
>>
>>52746264
Because Old Chinese used to have certain features that decayed and were eventually dropped, so two words that were different would now sound the same, but the feature that used to exist in one word left vestigial stress on the word which was not present in the other word, and this developed into a tone difference were the tone actually distinguished the two words.

This is the case in many languages with tone. Middle Chinese had a tone split when it developed into Mandarin because word final -p,-t,-k got dropped, and words that used to have it (like original bak rather that ba, assuming the same tone in Middle Chinese) had vestigial stress that gave the new ba (from bak) a different tone than the other ba
