I am glad mine is one of few nations that makes its own fighters. That's an exclusive club. Thanks to Brazil the gryphon might have a successor in 20-30 years. It was unlikely to happen otherwise because of the massive development costs. I just wish we could get an engine from a country outside of nato, would make us more flexible and independent. But good engines are fucking rare and hard to develop.

My nightmare is Sweden and Finland giving up our precious independence and joining nato. That would make our planes a lot more useless. Then we might as well just use typhoons or what have you.

SAAB cannot compete with the 5th gen fighters the US, China and Russia are pumping out.

Russia and China themselves are struggling with making them, and the problems the US has had with the F35 are well known.

Situation for SAAB looks even more bleak when 6th gen starts coming around.

It is only a matter of time until it folds or they start building Super Tucano tier aircraft.

not anymore, in the 80's and before it was formidable, but after the soviet union fell it has been utter shit

they removed HUGE chunks of the old defence with the intent of replacing it with a new, more modern military
but because of politics, they never replaced most of it

sweden's military industry is pretty based though, we have among the highest defence exports per capita (yes, muh per capita)
>>
>>52741248
I'm hoping our military will get higher budgets from now on and more energetic programs. We need it to be realistically independent. We should also take back the mandatory military service. It's not socialist enough to have volunteer army. It needs to be mandatory to properly represent the people as a whole.

On the whole we have a very good defense industry for our country's size. Bofors for example. Hopefully we can maintain it.

Finn pilots are regarded for their dog fighting skills.

It's the thing they practice the most for some reason. They are probably the best in the west at it.

Tbh it is not that. The biggest flaw in NATO is that the US carries the NATO so fucking hard that every other nation is basically underfunding their military. That's all good when it's relatively peaceful like now, but when shit hits the fan, all those countries (including mine) rely on NATO way too much. And it's so easy to cut defense spending, but it takes fucking years to get on the same level again when the situation calls for increased military spending.

We are accepting designs for a 6th gen when the F-35A is not even at IOC yet?
>>
>>52744387
The T-50 is dead in the sense that as it stands now it cannot possibly achieve its stated design goald without new purpose built engines, which do not exist. Given that Russians can't make engines for shit there is very little reason to believe it ever will.
>>
>>52744346
Maybe it was but it's a korean airplane.

Do we call the J-11 a Sino/Russian airplane?
>>
>>52744439
Yes. Literally not hard to find, maybe lrn2google.

>>
>>52744387
But Russia has not even showed that it is capable of building a stealth plane

The JSF project had it's ups and downs but it certainly was not about stealth
>>
>>52744489
>Maybe it was but it's a korean airplane.
How do you figure? A fighter jointly designed by Koreans and Americans is precisely that.
>>
>>52744439
This is actually normal. The program for the F-22 started just a few years after the introduction of the F-15 and 16, and the F-16 program started just a few years after the F-4.
>>
>>52744476
They made engines in the 60's, 70's, 80's, and 90's. They'll make the engines again.

Also on /k/ a few days ago, after sifting through a year of
>no s-ducts
>rivets
A respected anon named Koop showed us a source and images of the newest T-50 with S-ducts, and its rivets removed.
Most of /k/ shut up real good when that happened.

Underestimating Russia and China is the way we get caught blindsided.
2009 /k/ said the T-50 was never getting off paper. They shut up in early 2010.
>>
>>52744629
>They made engines in the 60's, 70's, 80's, and 90's.
Yes, shitty and unstealthy ones. Exactly what they make today.
>>
>>52744542
That says we plan to you faggot.
>>
>>52744489
It's a Korean plane in the same way the F-2 is a Japanese plane, in the sense that they are, but they're also both F-16 babies.
>>
>>52744658
Shitty? The SU-27 weighs more and flies faster than our F-15. Its thrust to weight is better as well.

Go fuck yourself.

>>52744684
It's a Korean plane with American help in its design. Not a Korean/American plane as the anon I called out said.
>>
>>52744672
No it doesn't. Lrn2read too while you're at it you idiot slavboo.

>The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has been working on a series of studies on 6th generation fighter technologies for the past several years, and Air Force officials have said they expect to begin flying the next-generation jets by as early as the 2030s. Industry teams are also known to have started internal research and development projects on potential 6th generation technologies.
>>
>>52744756
Lockheed helped design it, is helping sell it, shit it's even on their website.

If it's not an American plane someone needs to tell Lockheed.

It's a Korean plane built in Korea and sold by the Koreans.

>>52744871
Never said that. I simply said that the Al-31 is not a "shitty" engine. It is arguably better than the F-15's engine by performance stats. Though reliability is less.
>>
>>52744756
>Shitty? The SU-27 weighs more and flies faster than our F-15. Its thrust to weight is better as well.

You mean it's slower with an equivalent thrust to weight. The engines also have shitty reliability.
>>
>>52744756
>The SU-27 weighs more and flies faster than our F-15. Its thrust to weight is better as well.
Its engines also have a really cool habit of busting into flames with the added bonus of being quite possibly the single most radar reflective engine ever designed in human history.
>>
>>52744997
They are close in performance.
>>
>>52744996
>It's a Korean plane built in Korea and sold by the Koreans
Except that's false. It's a Korean and American designed plane built in Korea and sold by a consortium of the aforementioned Korean and American companies.

I'm sorry facts upset you slavboo but those are the facts.
>>
>>52745070
In that both are completely unsuitable for a 5th gen aircraft? Well sure, we can agree on that.

When Russia has an engine that is suitable we can revisit the viability of the T-50.

The soviets built jets. Russia has not. Su27 derivatives are not be planes.

Russia basically begged India to sign a deal last week, offering the T-50 at half price and India said no. Without that finding the project is basically dead.

The only reason these countries go with the F-35 is because they invested so many billions in them and have no other choice.

If America decides to reopen the Raptor production line and lift its export ban everyone with billions invested in the F-35A will drop it like a hot potato.

No they certainly wouldn't. No one has need to an air superiority fighter in their doctrine except the Brits who already fly the Typhoon.

The Raptor is not a strike fighter, you would not buy it if you wanted a strike fighter.

>French Navy (Marine Nationale) Rafale M carrier-based multirole fighters may conduct combat missions against the Islamic State (IS) in Iraq and Syria from a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier as soon as January 2017. The information comes from French TV channel TF1 (video in French). According to TF1 this subject was discussed between US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter and French Navy Rear Adm. Rene-Jean Crignola, Commander Task Force (CTF) 50.

>The reason why the French Navy would deploy its Rafale M aboard a US Navy aircraft carrier for combat operations is because of the planned major refit (Major Technical Shutdown or IPER in French) for France's sole aircraft carrier. The Charles De Gaulle next refit is scheduled for the start of 2017 and is expected to last a year and a half.

>If this was to happen, it would be the first time that French Navy aircraft would fly actual combat missions from an American aircraft carrier. The US Navy and French Navy are used to demonstrate their interoperabilty and Rafale M fighters have landed and launched several times already, almost on a yearly basis. The most recent examples are March 2015 when the two allied navies teste, implemented and improved their interoperability while on theatre and while actively engaged in combat missions in the Gulf. In January 2014, the same type of training happened as well, while on theatre.

>According to TF1, as many as 18 Rafale M could be deployed on the US Navy aircraft carrier. Some room would have to be made for the French Navy support crew as US Navy sailors are not familiar with maintaining the Rafale M aircraft. Likewise, room would have to be made for spare parts and ammunitions for the French aircraft.

>Contacted by Navy Recognition, the French Navy public affairs didn't want to comment the information.

I wouldn't dismiss dogfight skill so readily. BVR and close-in combat are necessary capabilities for any fighter, even in the present day. There's all kinds of scenarios where the close combat just ends up happening despite BVR capability. Thankfully the F-35 actually can mix it up at least as well as a legacy hornet, while adding its own capabilities like helmet-cued HOBS shots.
