I wouldn't dismiss dogfight skill so readily. BVR and close-in combat are necessary capabilities for any fighter, even in the present day. There's all kinds of scenarios where the close combat just ends up happening despite BVR capability. Thankfully the F-35 actually can mix it up at least as well as a legacy hornet, while adding its own capabilities like helmet-cued HOBS shots.

I guess it's because 7 F-16s were decommissioned in 2013 to be used as spare parts for the rest. Our F-16s are all block 15 with the MLU so they're getting pretty old by now. Need to get those F-35s fast before they start falling from the sky
